Bible Bucks - A Positive Reinforcement Tool

Can you imagine someone one getting up off their seat in the pew and interrupting the Pastor while he was preaching? What about groups of people talking and getting out of their seats? Fights breaking out? People yelling and crying? These are all common occurrences in Children’s Church or Sunday School unless there are rules and behavior management in place. We want church to be a place where children are excited to attend. So, how do we enforce structure and still have fun? Positive reinforcement is an excellent tool for leaders in children’s ministry. At Believers Church our children’s ministry is called BC Kids and we have embraced Bible Bucks as our positive reinforcement tool.

Bible Bucks is a digital currency we use like a point system. One of our volunteers created an app called The Bible Bucks App that our team uses every Sunday. Bible Bucks are rewarded for attendance, good behavior, bringing a Bible, verse memorization, and more! Each Sunday, a different group of children can shop at the BC Kids Gift Shop. The gift shop offers fun toys and seasonal gifts for BC Kids to “purchase” for others. Of course, they also buy things for themselves, too! The children can choose to spend their Bible Bucks or save up until next time for something “bigger” or more expensive.

When we began, we budgeted money for small items for the gift shop- stickers, chalk, bubbles, etc. Recently, God blessed us with a church member with a heart for children that also works at a local distribution center. She coordinates donations to our church from the center, so our gift shop stays stocked with amazing items like dolls, stuffed animals, race cars, and action figures! Other church members have also donated toys, candy, jewelry, and other items for the gift shop.

Skeptics might say that we should not bribe kids to do what they are supposed to do. Positive reinforcement is no different than getting paid at your job for doing what we are supposed to do! The Bible Bucks system teaches children the concept of a budget, saving, and earning money and helps them to understand that things cost money. We reward children in other areas of life, such as completing chores or making good grades. Why not reward them at church, too?

As God is a good Father and knows how to give good gifts and blesses His children, we as parents do that for our children. Our children’s ministry also wants to demonstrate God’s love and blessings through allowing the children we serve to earn special things. Bible Bucks has allowed us to create a positive learning environment in our children’s ministry where children are excited to learn about Jesus in a safe and happy place!

User Roles:

Volunteers: Limited to creating, updating, and deleting student profiles, without access to settings or user invitations.
